The 24 Hour Experience
Every day I spend in this huge city I learn a little bit more about people and myself. I took a lot of things for granted growing up in a town of 5,000. For instance, how often here do you hold a door for somebody and they walk through without the slightest inclination to lend you a thank you? Or, along those lines, how many times will somebody walk through a door right in front of you and it's almost like they go out of their way to not hold it for two extra seconds out of courtesy? Now sure this happened from time to time in my little midwest town, but certainly not with any kind of consistency. Here, I'm almost coming to expect it and that really is sad. I started noticing this today while working out at 24 Hour Fitness. Maybe it's just the kinds of people that place attracts; maybe it's just the "culture" of Highlands Ranch; maybe it's the urban nature instilled in people. Whatever it is, it's hard not to lose track of where you come from when so many people differ from it. Nevertheless, I guess I just have to work that much harder to bring people around. For every person that is rude, that one "Thank You" from an appreciative person makes it all worth while :: aa
